FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE--
SHERIFF’S OFFICE ANNOUNCES “OPERATION CRASH REDUCTION”
FINCASTLE, VA – The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, through its Be Safe Botetourt Traffic Safety Program initiative, has announced its participation in “Operation Crash Reduction” to ensure the safest possible traffic environment in and around our community.
Nationwide from 2015 to 2019, October was the most dangerous month on America's roads, accounting for more fatal crashes than during any other month. For the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Region 3, which includes Virginia, motor vehicle crashes are especially high, with Virginia being one of those states, seeing the highest number of fatalities occurring during October’s holiday weekend from 2015 to 2019, compared to other holiday periods.
To help drivers and passengers stay safe on the roads, the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office along with our Virginia highway safety partners are joining NHTSA in the Operation Crash Reduction effort.
The purpose of the campaign is to save lives and prevent injuries. During this awareness campaign, highway safety partners will be educating drivers and passengers on the dangers of driving unbuckled.
“People are losing their lives on Virginia roadways, and we want to be a part of the effort that helps save lives and prevent injuries," said Sheriff Matt Ward.
In the Commonwealth of Virginia during October 2020, there were 10,744 crashes, 78 fatalities and 5,343 injuries. These were the highest crash totals for any month in 2020. Of the October 2020 fatalities, 60% were unrestrained. More than half (56%) of the fatalities in 2020, were unrestrained.
